Strengthening Ties Between the Foreign Consular Corps and the New York City Police Department
On March 31, 2026, Ms. Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General, attended a meeting between the Society of Foreign Consuls in New York (SoFC) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to strengthen the relationship between the foreign consular corps and NYPD.
Ms. Rebecca Weiner, Deputy Commissioner of the Intelligence & Counterterrorism Bureau, delivered the welcoming remarks and discussed the NYPD's security strategies, missions, and goals. Her presentation covered city management, security systems, and safety preparations for hosting the FIFA World Cup 2026 in July 2026. She also introduced the NYPD Community Affairs Bureau and the Liaison Officers dedicated to coordinating with the Consulates in New York.
The delegation also visited the Joint Operations Center (JOC), the central hub for monitoring and tracking security incidents to ensure effective preparedness for various crises and situations. Following the meeting, Ms. Maia Bartaia, Consul General of Georgia in New York, in her capacity as President of the SoFC, led the consular corps in a ceremony to lay a wreath and flowers at the NYC Police Memorial. This was held to pay tribute and respect to the police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Participation in this meeting served as an excellent opportunity to strengthen ties with the NYPD, exchange vital information, and expand cooperation with NYPD, all of which will be instrumental in overseeing the welfare and safety of the Thai community in New York City.
