On April 11, 2025, Ms. Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, together with Ms. Katesuda Thongna, Consul, and officials from the Consular Section, visited Thai communities in Providence and Barrington, Rhode Island, as well as Mystic, Connecticut.
During the visit, the Consul General introduced herself and outlined the purpose of the outreach trip. She and the delegation also met with Thai residents to learn about their livelihoods, provide information on consular services, and take the opportunity to introduce and invite participation in the “Volunteer Consul” program—an initiative to engage Thai nationals as community-based volunteers to support the Consulate-General’s mission across its jurisdiction.
Rhode Island and Connecticut, two smaller states within the Consulate-General’s jurisdiction, are home to approximately 500 and 2,000 Thai nationals respectively. Thai residents in these states are engaged in a variety of professions, including as owners and employees of Thai restaurants and spas, as well as in both public and private sector positions. In addition, around 30 Thai students are currently enrolled in undergraduate through doctoral programs at Brown University in Rhode Island. The Consul General took the opportunity to meet with these students and offer advice on education, university life, and other relevant matters.
Furthermore, on April 14, 2025, Consul General Somjai visited Wat Prodket Chettharam America in Grand Island, upstate New York, and paid respects to the abbot, Phra Maha Piya Chandadal. She inquired about the welfare of the monastic community and surrounding Thai residents, and also visited Thai-owned restaurants in the city of Buffalo.
Community outreach within the consular jurisdiction is a key activity of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in New York. These visits aim to strengthen relations and build familiarity with Thai communities in the ten northeastern states under the Consulate’s jurisdiction.
They also provide an opportunity to gather information on local needs and ensure that the Consulate’s services reach out to the communities effectively. Moreover, the visits serve as a platform to promote the “Volunteer Consul” initiative, encouraging dedicated and capable Thai nationals in each area to contribute to the Consulate’s work and support their local communities.
