At the closing of April, the month of Songkran - the Thai traditional New Year, the Royal Thai Consulate General was pleased to participate in the celebrating events hosted by authorities of New York City, together with members of the Thai-American community. These events were held to celebrate the Thai community’s customs as well as to also reflect the respect for cultural diversity in New York City.
On April 29, 2025, Consul General Somjai Taphaopong, attended “Songkran & Thingyan Celebration” for Thai and Myanmar communities, hosted by the office of NYC Council Speaker Adrienne E. Adams, along with Council Member Shekar Krishnan, Linda Lee, and Susan Zhuang. Deputy Consul General Khanthong Nuanual, on behalf of the Consul General, also participated in the Queens Borough President Donovan Richards’ Songkran event held on April 28. Both events featured the water-pouring rituals for the community’s revered members, dazzling cultural performances, and presentation of proclamation to distinguished individuals whose contributions to the community were duly honored this year.
New York City and New York State steadily gives substantive recognition to the Songkran celebrations of Thai and other Asian communities. On April 7, NYS Assembly adopted the recurring resolution on “Commemorating the Asian American community’s celebration of Songkran on April 13 - 15, 2025”, proposed by NYS Assembly Member Steven Raga. This thereby exhibits how the Thai community is respectfully acknowledged and well embraced as a contributing part of the American society’s fabric.
