Celebrating Songkran Festival: Uniting Cultures Through Tradition   

On April 5, 2026, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in New York and Team Thailand agencies in New York participated in the event “Celebrating Thai Songkran: Uniting Cultures Through Tradition,” organized by the Thai Cultural Center of New York.

     At the event, Ms. Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, delivered the opening remarks and expressed her appreciation to the Thai Cultural Center of New York for its continuous dedication over the past 40 years in providing Thai language and culture. She commended the Center as a vital hub in preserving and fostering Thai identity and culture, particularly among Thai youth born and raised in the United States, enabling them to maintain a strong bond with Thailand.

    This year, Mrs. Sujitra Paliwong, President of the Thai Cultural center of New York along with volunteer teachers, and staff has organized a wide variety of activities including traditional water-pouring rituals to pay respect to elders, Thai handwriting and essay competitions on the theme of “Songkran Day,” cultural performances by members of the Thai community and Thai-American youth, as well as coloring activities highlighting Thailand. The event also showcased "Saneh Thai” (Thai Charm) with support from Thai agencies and community. Guests enjoyed Thai dessert, drinks, and beautiful fruit carvings from the Consulate. Restaurants certified by Thai SELECT project provided authentic Thai food, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand gave out souvenirs. Many Thai associations in New York also brought authentic food from different regions of Thailand.

     This collective support shows the strength and unity of the Thai community, which plays a vital role in bringing Thai culture and traditions for a global celebration.
