Attending the Thai Songkran Festival Organized by the Northern Thai Association of New York

On March 28, 2026, Ms. Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, presided over the opening ceremony of the Songkran festival. The event was organized by the Northern Thai Association of New York and held at Wat Vajiradhammapadip in Long Island, New York. Mrs. Thongsai Poonsuckworasan, President of the Association, stated that the event aimed to preserve the traditions of the Thai New Year (Songkran) and to raise funds for educational scholarships as well as to support hospital operations in Northern Thailand.

On this occasion, the Consul General expressed her appreciation to the Association for its role in preserving and promoting the unique traditions and culture of Northern Thailand to the local public. She noted that the Association's activities help empower and strengthen the Thai community abroad. Furthermore, such efforts demonstrate a deep connection to their motherland and a commitment to giving back, serving as an inspiring example for the young Thai-Americans born and raised overseas.

The event featured beautiful cultural performances by members of the Thai community, volunteer teachers from the Sunday Buddhist School of Wat Vajiradhammapadip, and Thai youth. Also Tung (Lanna hanging flag) Parade and musical performances left a lasting impression and brought great joy to all attendees.
