On April 5, 2025, Ms. Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, presided over the opening ceremony of the 2025 Songkran Festival organized by the Northern Thai Association of New York State at Wat Vajiradhammapadip in Long Island, New York. On this occasion, Mrs. Thongsai Poonsuckworasan, President of the Association, delivered welcome remarks and explained that proceeds from the event would be used to purchase medical equipment for Chai Prakan Hospital in Chiang Mai, provide scholarships to students in Northern Thailand, and support future charitable and temple-related activities.
The Consul General expressed appreciation to the Association and Thai community members in attendance, noting that the event reflected the strong sense of unity and kinship among Thais in New York, regardless of their regional origins in Thailand. She emphasized how such gatherings foster the image of a strong, loving, and connected Thai family abroad, while also serving as a meaningful example for younger generations, especially Thai youth born and raised overseas, to carry forward a sense of pride in their heritage.
The celebration also featured vibrant and impressive cultural performances by members of the Thai community and young Thai-Americans, including traditional music and dance presented by teachers and students from the Sunday Buddhist School at Wat Vajiradhammapadip, as well as a fashion show showcasing beautiful traditional Thai textiles.
