"New York City Council Celebrates Songkran and Thingyan with Thai and Myanmar Communities"

On April 20, 2026, Ms. Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, attended the “Songkran & Thingyan Celebration,” organized by the Office of the Speaker of the New York City Council in collaboration with Council Members Shekar Krishnan, Linda Lee, Christopher Marte, and Kamillah Hanks. The event brought together approximately 150 members of the Thai and Myanmar communities in

New York City to celebrate their traditional New Year festivals.
New York City has consistently recognized the importance of Songkran and other Asian New Year traditions. This year’s celebration, now in its third edition, highlights the rich cultural heritage of both communities while reflecting the city’s deep respect for cultural diversity and its recognition of the contributions of Thai and Asian communities in the United States.

The event featured traditional water-pouring rituals, cultural performances from Thailand and Myanmar, and a Muay Thai demonstration by youth performers. It also included a recognition ceremony honoring community members who have made meaningful contributions to New York City.

On this occasion, the Royal Thai Consulate General extends its congratulations to Ms. Patchanee Junta, owner of “Chang Noi” Thai restaurant in Staten Island, who was recognized for her dedication to strengthening the Thai community and fostering active civic engagement in collaboration with local partners.
