On November 17, 2024, the Royal Thai Consulate-General in New York and the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s New York Office supported the Thai Cultural Center of New York in organizing the event "Loy Krathong: Celebrating Thai Traditions and Unity Abroad." The event attracted a large number of Thai and international attendees.
Activities included demonstrations of traditional Krathong-making and floating Krathongs in a simulated pond, performances of Thai music and dance by youth and members of the Thai community, Thai fruit and vegetable carving, and a Thai food booth. The Consul General also contributed by bringing Thai desserts to share with attendees. The event was enlivened by DJ Bookko, who added vibrant energy and fun.
During the opening ceremony, Mrs. Suchitra Paleewong, President of the Thai Cultural Center of New York, welcomed participants and invited Miss Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, to officially open the event. The program also introduced the Center’s teachers and curriculum, featured interviews with alumni from various generations, and welcomed Senator Pornperm Thongsri, who shared insights with the Thai community and youth about the importance of preserving Thai heritage abroad and honoring the Thai monarchy.
The event aimed to raise awareness of the Center’s nearly 40-year history of teaching Thai language and culture and to reach a broader audience of new generations of youth and parents. It also celebrated the beauty of Thai culture through the Loy Krathong tradition, which the Ministry of Culture has designated as a "National Intangible Cultural Heritage" and is in the process of nominating for UNESCO recognition. This event highlighted Loy Krathong as a unique example of Thailand’s creative soft power, known and cherished worldwide.
The Royal Thai Consulate-General is proud to support the Thai community in New York in preserving and promoting Thai identity and fostering unity through collaborative activities. Events like these provide an opportunity for cross-cultural exchange, further enhancing the prestige and dignity of the Thai community in the United States.
