On April 27, 2025, Ms. Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, presided over the opening ceremony of the 2025 Songkran Festival at Wat Nawamintararachutis in Massachusetts. The event was also attended by Mr. Sandy Barry, a representative from the City of Taunton.

The Songkran Festival at Wat Nawamintararachutis embraced the spirit of cultural exchange, featuring traditional performances by communities from Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The celebration maintained the essence of Songkran through activities such as a Buddhist merit-making ceremony, almsgiving, the ceremonial bathing of Buddha images, and the water-pouring ritual for elders. The food fair offering a wide variety of Thai and international dishes, along with the Miss Songkran beauty pageant and the cultural performances by students of the Temple’s Sunday Buddhist School, also boosted the festive mood and cordial atmosphere among the local communities.

Following the opening remarks, the Consul General joined in the temple’s religious ceremonies, with the Thai community, and took the opportunity to meet and engage with Thai vendors and attendees who contributed to the vibrancy of the festival.

Wat Nawamintararachutis organized the 2025 Songkran Festival over two days, from April 26th to 27th, offering a meaningful platform to preserve and share Thai traditions with the broader community in Massachusetts.
