On April 12, 2025, Ms. Somjai Taphaopong, Consul General of Thailand in New York, took part in the celebration of Bengali New Year 1432, organized by the Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRB) in collaboration with the Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York, held at Times Square.
On this occasion, the Royal Thai Consulate-General supported a Thai cultural performance by the Moradokmai Theatre Community, who presented a traditional dance and music piece titled “Yok Rob” (The Battle Begins). The performance portrayed a dramatic scene from the Thai epic Ramakien, featuring the battle between Phra Ram and Tosakan through elegant Thai classical dance blended with contemporary Thai music—delivered gracefully amid the rain. The audience responded with heartfelt applause, showing their appreciation and encouragement.
Consul General Somjai also gave New Year’s greetings on stage to celebrate both the Bengali New Year and the Thai New Year or Songkran, which are traditionally observed around mid-April along with similar festivities in other South and Southeast Asian countries. She also introduced the Moradokmai group as a dedicated ensemble of young Thai performers who strive to preserve and promote Thai cultural heritage through theater and music. To everyone’s delight, the Consul General joined the group in singing a song, adding warmth and joy to the event.
This celebration not only reflected the vibrant cultural diversity of New York City and the strong collaboration among consulates, but also served as a powerful platform to showcase the creativity and talent of Thai youth. It highlighted the potential of Thai soft power to promote Thailand’s cultural appeal on the global stage with beauty, pride, and impact.
